In a world where a DNA test can help you find the person you are meant to be with, how far would you go to find The One?
This book really took me by surprise with how much I enjoyed it. I found the idea to be very original and intriguing — the fact that this concept was adapted into a thriller instead of romance or sci-fi really compelled me to pick it up.
This book had five perspectives in total and the numerous POVs were both a plus and a minus. On one hand, constantly switching between the POVs prevented me from being fully engrossed in the story and sometimes, I just wanted to keep reading one particular perspective. However, I liked how the perspectives showed the different scenarios (out of millions) that could arise due to this new technology. Each was intriguing and I was invested in all of them.
This was definitely one of those books where each chapter makes you need to read the next immediately. It was full of twists and turns; some were expected while others caught me completely off-guard. It felt like the author constantly asked himself, “What is the most messed up thing that can happen right now?”, and then wrote it down.
There was depth and complexity to each character’s story, with a lot of originality. The author basically wrote five different narratives and to that I say kudos.
After all, he also had to write 5 endings, all of which I found to be satisfying, with the final line + last page completely blowing me away.
“If you’ve got the opportunity to love someone as much as they love you, then grab it with both hands and hold on to it for dear life.”
Moreover, I really appreciate how the author included technology in the story. He did not just focus on 5 different love stories, but also the effects of this world-changing development in general. I’m glad he discussed the implications of this new technology on society and even the person who invented it. I like that there was a look at the bigger picture.
Overall, I love the directions the author took this idea and the way he had decided to use this concept. I highly recommend this book to any thriller fans for a different take on the genre.
