Awwwwwww! This was such a heartwarming book. As the name implies, Geekerella is a retelling of Cinderella; an orphan living with her stepmother and stepsisters, seeking out a way to a better life, deterred by endless obstacles. Something to note is that even though Geekerella is part of a series, each book in the series has an independent storyline.
I found the backdrop of the story really unique. The story explores the world of fandom and how fans find comfort and family within this special community. It was a world that I haven't seen explored as much in other stories that I’ve read before, and I was very intrigued.
I really loved the characters. Every one of them sounded distinct yet familiar to me at the same time. The entire cast felt very real; their struggles and emotions were developed organically and explained naturally along the course of the story. Each one popped and contributed to the storyline in their own eccentric ways. Their interactions were also vivid and realistically portrayed.
“I suck at being social. I think one thing and my mouth says something completely different, like I'm possessed.”
I also appreciate Ashley Poston for developing unique and fascinating backstories for the characters, which really show how the characters came to make the decisions they did. The pages were not cluttered with backstory, but we were still given glimpses of their past at appropriate parts of the story, and I really appreciated that.
Furthermore, the author’s writing made the book easy to read. There was, of course, some jargon that was necessary for the setting so as to make the story realistic. Overall though, I thought that the flow and the pacing of the story were very well executed, and I was flying through the pages.
Geekerella is, as stated above, a romance, but it was so different from many others that I had read before. I loved how the characters’ relationship developed far more differently as compared to other romances. Their interactions were very cute, and I was rooting for the both of them the whole time. I did wish there was some more development before the ending though, because they seemed to fall in love much faster than the time taken in real life (I could be wrong, I feel like I say this a lot for romances in general, my bad), but the ending did imply that there was more to the story than what was on the page, so I guess I can close an eye for this.
The story really explored the message “Don’t judge people just by their outward appearance”, and I was completely here for it. I loved how this message was incorporated into the storyline, and the way the various characters endorsed this message through their actions and interactions.
And lastly, I’m a sucker for happy endings, so Geekerella definitely had me grinning like an idiot at the end! Overall, a very light and easy, feel-good story that anyone can read.
