In the finale of the series, the ruthless new Kaiserin will stop at nothing to keep Astrea’s crown in her possession. When Prince Søren is kidnapped, the stakes are even higher for the rebels as they struggle to reclaim the kingdom and the crown. From the ashes, an Ember Queen rises to take back what’s hers. If Theo wants to stand a chance of winning this fight, she has to embrace her true self, once and for all.
And we have reached the end of the Ash Princess Trilogy! A huge shoutout if you’ve stuck through with reading my reviews for the entire series :D
Ember Queen definitely exhibited Laura Sebastian’s writing craft very well. With every book in the series, her writing becomes increasingly enjoyable to read.
However, I do have some criticisms about the plot. The ending of the book fell short of the Big Bang I was hoping for, and there were many subplots which I wish were explored a little more. Some plot points of the book also had me wondering whether I was missing something important or if there were plot holes in the story. The connectivity between various subplots could have been stronger in my opinion.

I appreciate the story for elaborating on the details of the war, and I enjoyed reading the descriptions of the events and Theo’s internal thoughts. The storyline got a little draggy after a while though, and there were some parts where I found myself losing interest in the story. I would rather have had less focus on the rising action and more emphasis on the climax scenes, because there was definitely room for development there.
That being said, as mentioned in the previous reviews, the characters are the stars of the story! I was able to push through the slower parts of the novel because I was rooting for many of the characters. I really like how the author crafted the dialogue for each character, because it was interesting to hear their unique voices. While I did feel that Blaise’s martyr-like qualities were a little overboard, characterisation was definitely a highlight in this book for me.
Overall, I would say that though this trilogy has a fairly predictable plot, I enjoyed the reading experience.
